How To Play The Saxophone General Information

So you want to learn how to play the saxophone? Well, ok then, lets give you a start with some free saxophone lessons. I do recommend that if you want to learn saxophone well then get a teacher.

First thing you're going to need on your journey to learn how to play saxophone is a sax! Along with that you will also need plenty of enthusiasim, masses of commitment and tolerent neighbours!

Second thing on the learn saxophone journey. You're not going to sound like your favourite player for quite some time, if at all. Don't expect to play the Pink Panther theme well for quite a while yet. It just isn't going to happen. And as for playing it like Plas Johnson, well it's just going to take time and even then you may never sound like him. Learing how to play the saxophone and how to play it well is all about patience and commitment. You really need to set time aside every day to practice, even if it's just for half an hour a day.

Still enthusiastic? Still committed and got those tolerent neighbours? Still want to learn how to play the saxophone Good! Now what about the sax? If you've already got one, great! If you haven't then you've got a choice to make. What type of saxophone do you go for? I'll stick to the four main types, Soprano, Alto, Tenor or Baritone.

Which Sax?

It's generaly recommended that beginners start with an Alto or a Tenor with a preference toward Alto. I took that advice and started with an Alto Saxophone. However I didn't listen to my own advice. (I was far too desperate to learn how to play saxophone!) Yanigasawa Tenor Sax After about 3 weeks of playing I realised that I actually wanted a deeper sound and so I went out and got a Tenor. Thats's fine if you have the money, and I confess I play both daily. But if you haven't got wads of cash to throw around to buy countless Tenor Saxophones or Alto Saxophones then I suggest you listen intently to the types of saxophone sound and the saxophone players you like. Find out what type of sax is being played and make your choice from there.

If you can, find a specialist store who can guide you. I don't recommend going to your local music store unless they actually have someone who plays sax and that you can listen to. You will have to make a judgement call as to whether you actually believe what they are telling you. Remember, it's a shop. They are there to make money. An unscrupulous retailer may well push you toward something you don't want just because there is more profit in it for them.

Happy? Then lets start learning how to put it together and then how to play the saxophone.

Where to buy

Buying online can be an absolute minefield and you could easily end up with a dog of a sax! Type 'saxophone reviews' in your search engine and start reading. There are some good sites out there full of useful information. The more you read the more informed you will become and the better the choice you will make. Read our page on buying a sax to give you the ability to make a more informed choice.

Lets move on. THIS IS NOT A TOY!!!!!! It's a musical instrument and as such needs to be treated with care and respect. Treat it well and it will last for years. Treat it badly and it will revolt causing you untold amounts of displeasure and dispair. If you're a man, treat it like a lady, if you're a woman, treat it like your favourite pair of shoes, if you're child, treat it like your favourite toy and if you're a teenager, well, just try not to damage it! Ok, lecture over now move onto the next page to start to learn saxophone and your first note.
