Cheap saxophones. Chinese saxophone. Discount Saxophone. Are they just a con? Are they any good?
Are they worth the money? Should you really go out and buy saxophones for cheap.
Whether you are looking for cheap alto saxophones, cheap tenor saxophones, cheap soprano etc. cheap and discount are terms that seem to go hand in hand with the chinese saxophone market nowadays. The days when the only option open for you to buy either a used tenor saxophone or a used alto saxophone was to search out a reputable make like Selmer, Yanigasawa, or Yamaha seem to be fast disappearing.
Cheap saxes abound nowadays. Take a quick look at ebay and you could easily pick up a sax for around £150. That however, is no assurance of quality. Spend £150 on a sax and the chances are you'll probably regret it. That said there are some fairly good quality chinese saxophones to be had if you know what to look for. There's a very reputable saxophone maker out there who actually uses a chinese horn for one of their models.
There has been a sudden influx of cheaper models of no specific branding being available for as little as £170.
This can be even cheaper if you take a quick look through ebay. These sax's can be almost of equal quality to a good named student alto saxophone. However 'buyer beware' is required here. Some offer remarkable quality for the price and some most definitely do not.
If you do find yourself being tempted by one of these take the time to read reviews on the web, some of which are impartial (SH Woodwind) and some of which try very hard to mislead you into buying a specific brand. Again, beware.
Whatever you decide please apply some common sense to your shopping approach.
I personally wouldn't touch anything on ebay that doesn't come with a well known name. ( Selmer, Keilworth, Yamaha, Yanigasawa etc.) The trouble being, if you are new you won't know what's good and what's bad when you play it. A bad sax could put you off for life.
Have a look around the web for a review or two. You could try SH Woodwind which gives quite a balanced review. They also compare a chinese sax with a more well known brand. I do have a chinese cheap alto saxophone myself and have found no real issues with it. The top end was a bit of a struggle but a quick change of mouthpiece sorted that out.
Buy from a long established site that offers you a money back guarantee if you are not happy.
Get a saxophone teacher to try the horn as early as you can and definitely before the returns guarantee runs out.
Don't buy a sax just because it's the cheapest you can find. An extra £20 can make a difference. And always in the world of cheap saxophones, 'Buyer Beware' Summing up, there are bargins to be had when buying saxophones for cheap but whether it is a cheap alto saxophone, cheap tenor saxophone or something else just use common sense.
Just who is the greatest? Is your favourite on there? If not let us know and we will add them
