Next on our step of learning how to play saxophone is note bending.
This is a great effect if you can pull it off. You know all those sexy licks that get played in films when a beautiful woman walks in the room. You know, the pshycotic axe murdering one? Well theres lots of note bend used in those licks.
I found this quite difficult to learn well and as such I've marked it as difficult. You may have greater success than me.
This, as I have experienced, is easier to play on a high note, say a top C, for instance.
What you are trying to do is start the note lower than usual and then take it up to correct pitch.
Play a C, then play it again with your embouchre slackened slightly and then tighten it up. There also needs to be an increase in air pressure when you are doing this so I hope by now you've been working on your breathing.
You may find you get some truly horrible sounds coming out of your sax at first. Squeaks etc. The only answer to this is perserverence. As with anything good you have to practice.
In musical notation a note bend is symbolized by a curved line in front of the note. Apologies for my rendition, it will look better in a book.
If you feel like you've failed miserably on this don't go getting all fed up. It's a skill that requires practice so just do it! Practice that is.
