On the saxophone solo front I now have to dedicate a page to Madness. Why? Because they are the reason that saxophone music and saxophone songs figure in my life.
None of Madness' songs will ever go down as saxophone classics but they did put sax at the fore front of music along with many other bands of the late 70's and early 80's and for that I thank them.
I've picked an early saxophone solo and a later one so you can hear the difference time makes on the quality of the tone.Love it! One thing you could always be sure of with Madness was they were going to do an interesting video. Lot's of growling on the saxophone solo bit which helps to hide any bum notes. You can still hear an occasional flat note and several squeaks where he's blowing too hard or the reed wasn't set right. Still a great record though.
Madness began to mellow around 84 and started producing songs with less of a raw feel to them. The saxophone music got softer and more mellow as well. I'm not sure whether better playing or better production is responsible for the improved tone of the saxophone music. Probably a bit of both. Incidentally the 'old lady' in the video is the wife of singer 'Suggs'
The two are saxophone solo alternatives. I'm sure the majority of us, young and old have heard of Madness. They are, afterall, a legend.
Whether you rate the saxophone playing or not is irrelevant. What Madness did was to put the saxophone at the front of the music culture of the time. Because of them and others there are still plenty of saxophone songs and saxophone solo parts knocking about to listen to.
