Selmer Saxophone
A Selmer saxophone. Probably the ultimate dream for all of us budding saxophonists. Whether it be from Selmer Paris or Selmer USA a Selmer Saxaphone (not the correct spelling) is what most of us want, right now! An explanation follows as to why there are so many different names for a Selmer Sax so you can at least search for one with some knowledge of what you are buying.
Going back to the late 19th century, two brothers Henri and Alexandre Selmer graduated as clarenetists. Henri started to make mouthpieces and reeds and gained a reputation for the quality of his work. Following on from this he opened a shop in Paris. Alexandre meanwhile travelled to America where he became principal clarentist for several lead Orchestras. Alexandre also opened up a store, this time in New York city, selling his brothers instruments. The reputation of the Selmer products was boosted by winning a gold medal for their clarinets at the 1904 worlds fair.
Alexandre decide to return home to France and left his business in the USA under the supervision of George Bundy. Hence the name Selmer Bundy. Bundy moved production of the instruments to Elkhart, Indiana. We now have a reason for the name of an Elkhart Sax. Bundy bought the business from the Selmers and so was born Selmer USA, an independent company of Selmer Paris although they did continue to sell each others wares.
Much time passes. The now Selmer Industries buys Steinway Musical Properties, changes the company name to Steinway Musical Instruments who in turn buy The Selmer Company and C.G. Conn to form Conn-Selmer. Just to make things a little more confusing Conn-Selmer bought the Le blanc instrument makers in 2004. Oh, theres also La Voix in there somewhere as well. And of course we can't forget the jewel in the crown. Henri
Selmer of Paris.
As you can see there are many variations of the Selmer name. This is made more complex by the introduction of the chinese made Conn-Selmer Prelude sax. Now I've either helped or hindered you in your search but at least you now have an idea about the Selmer Saxophone, Selmer Paris, Selmer USA and Conn-Selmer.
